Mr. Kalicharan Mukhopadhyay Sir has gone through a lot of history and collected some information about our old Calcutta fire system.

He took up his pen thinking of presenting this subject for the knowledge of his dear readership.

Do you know why the Bengali name of fire brigade is Damakal?? 

It should have been the fire force... right??

But it can be said that it is associated with 150 years old story when people did not know the use of phone. 

A picture is given, it is still standing at Heduwa intersection in such a broken state. 

Now the question is how the name "Firefighter" is associated with it? 

150 years ago in the city of Calcutta there used to be some kind of cupboard-like post on the roadside with glass sealed on both sides.

Inside was a faucet with a handle. 

When there was a fire somewhere, if the glass was broken and the handle of the tap was choked 7-8 times, the leaf under the ground would be used to inform the nearest fire brigade office in sign language.

When the news came from the post of a certain region, the government people used to put out the fire in a horse-drawn cart with a tank full of water. 

Since then, the name of the fire brigade has been popularly called the fire brigade, "fire brigade" for short.
